Candle Tray Decor: How to Style It with LED Tealight Holders

5 min read Updated By Kahaus · printed in Poland

In short

  • Our oval tray (19.7 × 12.3 cm) takes two holders side by side; in the set of three, the third stands next to it.
  • Every holder here is for LED tealights only. PLA softens above about 55 °C, so a real flame is out.
  • Good spots: coffee table, dining table, bathroom shelf, hallway. Bad spots: on a radiator, next to a fireplace or oven, in a hot car.

A candle tray is the quickest way to make a coffee table look finished: a few holders gathered on one base instead of scattered around the room. We print ours in PLA in Poland, and because of that material we say it plainly at the start: every holder in this article is for LED tealights only, never a real flame.

Below you will find how to compose the tray so it does not look like a shop shelf, where it works best at home, where it should never stand, and which of our sets suits which spot.

What goes on a candle tray

Keep it simple: a base, a light source and at most one extra element. Our ribbed oval tray measures 19.7 × 12.3 × 1.6 cm, and each ribbed holder is 7.8 cm across and 3.5 cm high, sized for standard LED tealights. Two holders fill the tray side by side; that is the tray with 2 LED tealight holders. The set of 3 holders with tray uses the same tray and adds a third holder that stands next to it.

Why LED only: PLA is a plastic made from plant-based raw materials and it softens above roughly 55 °C. A burning tealight gets far hotter than that, so a real candle would deform the holder and is a fire risk. An LED tealight gives the same small warm spot of light without the heat. They are not included in our sets, so plan to buy a few separately.

How to compose it so it looks intentional

  • Odd numbers look calmer. Three holders read as a group, four often read as a row. That is why the set of three keeps one holder off the tray.
  • Let some tray show. The ribbed rim is part of the look. Cover the tray edge to edge and it stops working as a frame.
  • One colour, one texture. Each of our sets comes in a single colour (beige, white, black or grey), so tray and holders match without effort. Bring contrast from around it: a wooden table top, a linen runner.
  • Add height once. The holders are low. One taller piece, such as the 12.4 cm vase in the vase set with tray and tealight holder, gives the eye somewhere to go. That vase is for dried grasses only; it is not watertight.
  • Then stop. Tray, light, one tall element. Anything more turns into clutter.

On a long dining table you can split the set of three: two holders on the tray in the middle, the third further along, so the light reaches both ends of the table.

Where to put a candle tray

At under 20 cm long, the tray fits places where a big centrepiece would not.

  • Coffee table: the classic spot. Place it slightly off-centre so there is still room for cups and a book.
  • Dining table: at 3.5 cm the holders do not block the view across the table.
  • Sideboard or hallway console: one tray per surface is enough, next to a mirror or a lamp.
  • Bathroom shelf or bedside table: a soft light in the evening, without a flame near towels or bedding.
  • Windowsill: fine, as long as there is no radiator right under it.

Where not: on or just above a radiator, next to a fireplace, oven or hob, in a car on a warm day, and never beside real burning candles. It is the same limit every time: PLA softens above about 55 °C. The dishwasher is out too; a damp cloth is all it needs.

Which set for which spot

All the sets below work on the same principle: one base, pieces in one colour, LED light only.

Set What is inside Where it works best
Tray with 2 holders Tray 19.7 × 12.3 cm, 2 holders 7.8 × 3.5 cm Narrow shelf, bedside table, bathroom
Set of 3 with tray Same tray, 3 holders Coffee table, long dining table
Vase set with tray and holder Tray, Shizu vase 12.4 cm, 1 holder Console, windowsill: light plus dried grasses
Autumn set, 4 pieces Tray, pumpkin lantern, pumpkin holder, decorative pumpkin Dining table, sideboard in autumn
Mushroom set of 3 Tray 19.3 × 14.8 cm, mushroom lantern 11.1 cm, 2 mushrooms with a hidden compartment Bedroom, shelf, all year

If you already own LED candles and only need a base, the oval fluted tray is sold on its own. It is the same 19.7 × 12.3 cm size and, outside candle season, it holds keys in the hallway or jewellery on a dresser.

Changing the tray with the seasons

The tray stays, what stands on it changes. In autumn swap the round holders for a pumpkin lantern for LED tealights (9 cm, in eleven colours) or take the ready-made autumn set; there is more in our autumn and Halloween decor. The mushroom set has a lantern with a removable cap: the LED tealight goes underneath.

In December the same tray with white holders becomes part of the festive table. We describe that setting in our guide to Scandinavian Christmas table decor with LED. After the holidays the holders simply go back to the coffee table.

Questions we often hear

Are LED tealights included?

No, none of our sets includes them. The holders are sized for standard LED tealights, which you can buy in any household shop.

Can I use a real tealight just for one evening?

No. PLA softens above about 55 °C and a burning tealight gets much hotter. The holder would deform and it is a fire risk, even for a short time.

Will the tray break if it falls off the table?

PLA is light and does not shatter like ceramic or glass. To clean it, wipe it with a damp cloth; keep it out of the dishwasher.
