Jewellery Storage Ideas: No More Tangles, Losses or Scratches

5 min read Updated By Kahaus · printed in Poland

In short

  • One type per compartment: chains, earrings and rings kept apart do not tangle or scratch each other.
  • Split everyday from occasional: an open dish for what you wear daily, a box with a lid for the rest.
  • For travel, a small container with a screw lid keeps earrings and rings together in your bag.

Good jewellery storage ideas solve three problems at once: chains that knot themselves in a drawer, earrings that lose their partner and rings that scratch each other in a pile. You do not need a big piece of furniture for that. You need separation, a fixed place and a minute at the end of the day.

We print boxes, dishes and small containers ourselves in Poland, to order. Below is how we would organise jewellery with them, where each piece fits best and where it does not.

Why jewellery tangles, goes missing and gets scratched

Most of the trouble starts when everything shares one space. Fine chains slide into each other and knot every time the drawer moves. Stones and metal edges rub against softer pieces. Studs and thin rings slip under something and stay there for months.

  • Tangling: necklaces and bracelets lying loose together.
  • Losing: no fixed spot, so earrings end up on the bathroom shelf, the desk and the bedside table.
  • Scratching: rings and pendants rubbing against each other in one heap.

There is one more thing worth knowing: silver darkens over time, and damp air speeds it up. A steamy bathroom is the worst place for jewellery; a dry bedroom or hallway is better. We will leave polishing and cleaning to your jeweller. Storage is where we can help.

How to organise jewellery: one compartment, one type

The simplest rule works best: necklaces apart from earrings, earrings apart from rings. Our jewellery box with a 6-compartment tray gives you enough room for a sensible split:

  • one compartment per chain, laid in a loose circle so it does not knot with the next one;
  • earrings in pairs, with studs and hoops in separate compartments;
  • rings together in one compartment, or two if you have many;
  • a watch in a compartment of its own.

The box measures 20.8 × 20.3 cm and is approx. 8.3 cm high, so it sits comfortably on a chest of drawers, dressing table, desk or shelf. Lift the tray out and the whole interior is free for bulkier pieces. It closes with the hinged lid alone and has no lock: it keeps order, it is not a safe. Valuables belong somewhere more secure.

Everyday versus occasional jewellery

What you wear every day has to be within reach, or it stays wherever you took it off. What you wear twice a year should be put away so it does not get in the way. That is why we would not keep everything in one place.

Where What goes there Our piece
Bedside table The ring and earrings you take off before sleep Mushroom container, 7.5 cm, with a lift-off cap
Hallway or sideboard Watch, bracelet, keys on the way out Catch-all bowl, 17.6 cm
Dressing table This week's jewellery and your perfume Oval fluted tray, 19.7 × 12.3 cm
Chest of drawers The whole collection and occasional pieces Jewellery box with 6 compartments
Shelf Small items hidden under a cap, as decoration Acorn container, approx. 11.6 cm

For daily pieces, an open dish beats a drawer: you see at a glance what is there. The bowl is 3.5 cm high with a softly rounded rim; the tray has a low ribbed edge that keeps things in place. Both are calm Japandi shapes, so they look like decor rather than storage. More pieces like these are in our home decor and practical home collections.

Jewellery storage when you travel

Hotel sinks and toiletry bags are where earrings disappear. A small closed container does the job better than a loose pouch. Our travel container with a screw lid has a hexagonal body and a threaded lid, measures 3.8 × 3.5 cm, is approx. 2.5 cm high and weighs 12 g. It holds earrings, rings and other small things that are easily lost in luggage, and takes up very little room in a handbag or toiletry bag.

Two honest caveats. It is not intended for liquids, so keep it for dry items. And it is small: a ring and a pair or two of earrings, not your whole collection. A long chain travels better on its own, so it does not wrap itself around everything else.

Small habits that help

  • The same place every evening. A fixed spot matters more than the container itself.
  • Close the clasps. A fastened chain tangles far less than an open one.
  • Keep it dry and cool. Not in the bathroom, and keep our PLA containers away from radiators and other heat sources.
  • Mix colours with intent. The box comes in 11 colours with a light lid and tray, so it can match the bedroom or stand out.

A jewellery box is also an easy present for someone who keeps losing earrings. If you are looking for more ideas, see our small gifts for women; for a new flat, our housewarming gift ideas.

Rings, earrings and our travel container are small objects: keep them out of reach of children under 3. None of these pieces is meant for food, and the travel container is not for liquids.

Questions we often hear

Does the jewellery box lock?

No. It closes with the hinged lid alone and has no lock, so everything stays within easy reach. For valuables, use something that locks.

Where do I put a long necklace?

Coil it loosely in a compartment of its own, with the clasp closed. If you have bulkier pieces, lift the tray out and use the whole interior of the box.

Can I take the travel container in my handbag?

Yes, that is what it is for. It weighs 12 g and closes with a screw lid. Just keep it for dry items: it is not intended for liquids.
