Housewarming Gifts That Suit Any New Home: Decor Ideas

In short

  • Go neutral and compact: a set in beige, white or grey fits almost any room, with nothing to drill.
  • Decor sets arrive complete: vases or LED tealight holders on a matching tray, in one colour.
  • Mind the details: vases for dried flowers only, holders for LED tealights only, and a pot cover has no drainage hole.

Good housewarming gifts have a tricky job: they must fit a home you may not have seen yet, where the boxes are still being unpacked. A large picture or a bold lamp is a gamble. A small, calm piece that finds its place on a sideboard, windowsill or hallway shelf rarely is.

We print our home decor ourselves in Poland, to order. Here is how we would choose from our own range: for a style you do not know, for plant lovers, and for a laugh.

What makes a good housewarming gift

In the first weeks in a new place, people are short of storage space and spare attention. The best gifts are small, need no assembly and are easy to move if the furniture ends up elsewhere.

Customs help as well. In Poland and several other Central and Eastern European countries, bread and salt are the traditional welcome for a new home, a wish that the household never runs short of the basics. A decor piece works alongside either: the bread gets eaten, the vase stays.

  • Neutral colours. Beige, white and grey go with wooden floors, white walls and most furniture.
  • Nothing to drill. People who rent will be especially grateful.
  • A set rather than a single piece. It looks finished straight out of the box.

Know a little about the people moving in? Start here.

The host Gift Why it works
Minimalist, or you do not know their style Set of 2 vases with oval tray Two ribbed vases, 12 and 9.6 cm, on one tray, all in one colour
Loves cosy evenings Tray with 2 LED tealight holders Soft light without fire: the holders take LED tealights only
Plant lover who likes to repot Plant pot with saucer Drainage hole and a twist-lock saucer, plant straight into soil
Beginner with plants Pot cover on legs No drainage hole: the plant stays in its nursery pot
Always looking for their keys Oval fluted tray One fixed spot in the hallway, 19.7 × 12.3 cm
Needs a laugh after the move Sheep toilet paper holder The roll becomes a sheep; it stands free, nothing to drill

Decor sets: finished the moment they unpack

A set is the safest decor gift, because nobody has to match anything. The set of 2 vases with an oval tray puts a 12 cm and a 9.6 cm vase side by side on a ribbed tray measuring 19.7 × 12.3 cm. The vase set with tray and LED tealight holder swaps the second vase for a ribbed holder, 7.8 cm across.

For someone who prefers light to flowers, the tray with 2 LED tealight holders or the set of 3 holders with a tray makes a quiet table centrepiece. Both take LED tealights only, never a real flame. Tealights are not included, so add a pack yourself.

Vases deserve one clear line on the gift card: dried grasses, pampas and artificial flowers only, no water. To match a vase to a bouquet, see our guide on choosing a dried flower vase in Japandi style. More ready-made combinations are in our Sets collection.

Plant pots: with a drainage hole or without

A plant is the classic housewarming gift, and the pot decides how easy it is to live with.

  • Pot with a drainage hole. The plant pot with saucer has a hole in the base and a saucer that locks on with a twist, so you plant straight into soil and excess water runs into the saucer. The Japandi plant pot, 8.4 cm, works the same way with a drained insert inside a cover pot, so it needs no separate saucer.
  • Cover pot without a drainage hole. The pot cover on legs is exactly that, a cover. The plant stays in its plastic nursery pot, up to 9 cm, and any excess water is poured out after watering.

Our tip: for a plant beginner, a cover pot with the plant still in its nursery pot is the easiest to handle. Plants and soil are not included, so pick up a small plant on the way.

Hallway and bathroom: small gifts they will use every day

The first thing that goes missing in a new flat is the keys. The oval fluted tray, 19.7 × 12.3 × 1.6 cm, gives them one fixed spot by the door.

For hosts with a sense of humour, the sheep toilet paper holder is our most cheerful housewarming gift. The black head with floppy ears slides into the roll, four legs hold it up, and the white paper does the job of the wool. It stands free: nothing to drill, no marks on the tiles. Unlike our decor, the sheep is printed in PETG, which copes better with bathroom humidity. The set of 3 sheep covers the bathroom, the guest toilet and one to give away. More small helpers are in Practical home.

Before you wrap it: our vases are not watertight, so dried flowers only. The tealight holders are for LED tealights only, never a real flame. PLA softens above about 55 °C, so keep the decor off radiators and out of hot cars.

Questions we often hear

Which colour should I choose if I do not know their interior?

Beige, white or grey: they sit well with wooden floors, white walls and most furniture. Our sets come in these four colours.

Are plants, dried flowers or tealights included?

No. You get the decor piece in the colour you choose. Plants, soil, dried flowers and LED tealights are not included; the ones in our photos only show possible arrangements.

Is a vase a good gift for someone who loves fresh flowers?

Only if they like dried ones too. Our PLA vases are not watertight and cannot hold water. For a fan of fresh greenery, the plant pot with saucer is the better choice.
