Three small 3D-printed Christmas tree figurines (green twisted, white bubble, gold LED cone glowing softly) and a beige angel on a white windowsill, snowy garden behind the glass, spruce sprig and mug

Christmas Decor Ideas for the Windowsill, Sideboard and Shelf

In short

  • Three spots outside the table carry most of the Christmas mood: the windowsill, the sideboard and one shelf at eye level.
  • Small trees 13.2 to 15 cm high, an 8.2 cm angel and an 18.7 cm gnome fit where a full-size tree never would.
  • LED tealights only, never a real flame, and no PLA decor directly above a running radiator.

Most Christmas decor ideas begin and end with the tree and the dinner table. Yet the windowsill, the sideboard and a shelf in the living room set the mood from the first Advent weekend until Twelfth Night, long before anyone lays the table.

Here are our ideas for those three spots, built from small pieces we print in Poland from PLA. The festive table has a guide of its own: Christmas table decor in minimal Scandinavian style.

Windowsill: narrow, low and seen from both sides

Christmas windowsill decorations have two audiences: you in the room and everyone walking past outside in the dark. So light matters most here, and the pieces should stay low enough not to catch the curtain.

Measure the depth first. Grouped like a small forest, our set of 3 Christmas trees takes up about 23.2 × 19.4 cm. On a narrow sill, stand them in a row: the widest one, the twisted tree, is 11 cm across, so a strip of roughly that depth is enough. The cone tree holds an LED tealight, so the sill glows in the evening with no flame near the curtains.

Before you decorate, check: is there a radiator under the window? PLA softens in heat, so a sill above a hot radiator is the wrong place for printed decor. If the heating runs all winter, move the trees to the sideboard and keep the window for the hanging angel on a string from the curtain pole.

Sideboard: a small forest instead of a big tree

If there is no room for a full-size tree, a tabletop Christmas tree group does the job on a sideboard or chest of drawers. The three trees in our set differ in shape and height, twisted at 14 cm, bubble at 15 cm and the LED cone at 13.2 cm, so they read as an arrangement, not three copies. Together they weigh 105 g and do not shatter like glass.

The set comes in six colour mixes: Classic Green and Red feel traditional, White and Nordic (white, grey, beige) suit a pale Scandinavian room, Gold and Silver add glossy silk tones. Our tip: pick the mix that repeats a colour already on the sideboard.

For a fuller look, put the trees on one side and light on the other. The tray with 2 LED tealight holders (tray 19.7 × 12.3 cm) keeps the light in one place, and the slim twisted vase (18.2 cm high) adds height with a few dry twigs. Our vases take dry stems only, never water. More on this in our guide to candle tray decor with LED tealight holders, and ready-made combinations are in Sets.

Shelf: one figure per gap

On a shelf, small decor disappears between books and frames. Give each gap one clear figure.

The hanging angel is 8.2 cm high and weighs 18 g. It has a loop for a piece of string, so you can hang it from a shelf bracket or a curtain pole, but it also stands on its own. String is not included. It comes in 11 colours, from white and beige to silk gold and silk silver, so two or three angels in one colour along a shelf look calm.

The decorative gnome is the tallest piece here, at about 18.7 cm. Its body is hollow and the tall hat lifts off as a lid, so it hides small things: a note for an Advent surprise or spare batteries for the LED tealights. The hat comes in 11 colours, the body and beard are always light. It is decoration, not a toy, and not intended for children.

LED light: which holder for which spot

Each spot needs only one or two small points of light. Our low holders take LED tealights and look finished even when the light is off.

Piece Size Where it fits best Light
Set of 3 Christmas trees 14, 15 and 13.2 cm high, about 23.2 × 19.4 cm together sideboard, deep windowsill LED tealight in the cone
Hanging angel 8.2 × 4.4 × 6.5 cm shelf, hung on a string none
Gnome with removable hat about 18.7 cm high sideboard, hallway shelf none, storage inside
Holder with twisted ribs Ø 7.8 cm, 3.5 cm high windowsill, next to the trees 1 LED tealight
Bubble holder Ø 8.3 cm, 3.7 cm high shelf, beside the angel 1 LED tealight
Ribbed holder Ø 7.8 cm, 3.5 cm high sideboard, in a group 1 LED tealight
Tray with 2 holders tray 19.7 × 12.3 cm sideboard, hallway console 2 LED tealights
Twisted vase 18.2 cm high, 6.2 cm wide sideboard, narrow windowsill none, dry stems

The twisted ribs holder and the ribbed holder share one footprint and pair well; the bubble holder is a touch wider and softer in outline. They come in 10 or 11 colours, including silk gold to match the gold cone tree. More holders and vases are in Home decor.

LED tealights only, never a real flame: PLA softens at high temperatures, and windowsills sit right next to curtains. Tealights are not included. Keep every piece indoors and away from radiators and other heat sources.

Questions we often hear

Are the trees ornaments to hang on a Christmas tree?

No. The set is three standing figurines, 13.2 to 15 cm high. Of the pieces here, only the angel has a loop for hanging.

Can I put the decorations on a windowsill above a radiator?

Not while the heating is on. PLA softens in heat, so choose a sill without a radiator below it, or move the trees to a sideboard or shelf.

Are LED tealights included?

No. The cone tree and the holders take LED tealights, which you buy separately.
