Nativity Scene, Small and Modern: Globe, Shell, Panel or Tree

5 min read Updated By Kahaus · printed in Poland

In short

  • Five small nativity scenes for five places: the 13.9 cm globe for a shelf or table, the 4.4 cm shell for a tight spot, the 20 × 15.4 cm panel for a window, the hoop ornament and the flat baubles for the tree.
  • Every piece is printed in one colour with nothing painted on: 10 or 12 shades, from white and beige to silk gold, black and oak.
  • PLA wants a cool spot: indoors, away from radiators and real candles, and the thin panel must not be bent.

A nativity scene does not have to be a crowd of painted figures on a bed of straw. Ours are small, modern and in one colour: the nativity globe is 13.9 cm tall and holds the whole scene, camel and sheep included, inside a ball, and the smallest piece is a 4.4 cm shell with three figures.

Here is how the five forms compare and where each one works: windowsill, shelf, window, tree or festive table. We print all of them in Poland from PLA, to order, in the colour you pick.

Small nativity scene: five forms side by side

The quickest way to choose is by place and size. Two pieces stand, two hang, and the panel leans.

Piece Size Stands or hangs Where it fits best Colours
Nativity globe 10.7 × 9.2 × 13.9 cm, 125 g stands shelf, dresser, middle of the table 10
Nativity in a round shell 4.4 × 4.1 × 3.8 cm, 9 g stands narrow windowsill, desk, between books 12
Cutout panel 20 × 15.4 cm, 0.1 cm thick, 10 g leans or is fixed window pane, wall above a sideboard 12
Hoop ornament 9.8 × 8 cm, 0.3 cm thick, 7 g hangs, two loops tree, branch, curtain pole 12
Flat bauble, 2 pcs 10 × 12.5 cm each, 0.2 cm thick, 20 g for two hangs tree, window, advent wreath, on a gift 10

Shelf, dresser and table: the globe

The nativity globe is the only piece here with real depth. The scene sits inside a ball-shaped body: a camel, a sheep, the figures and stars above them. At 13.9 cm tall and 125 g it stands on its own among other festive figurines.

Give it eye level. On a dresser or a shelf it reads from across the room; in the middle of the table it works as a centrepiece, as long as the candles around it are LED. The stars and the camel's tail are thin, so lift it by the body, not by the top.

Tight spots: the 4.4 cm shell

If the windowsill is narrow or the shelf already full, the nativity in a round shell is the answer. A deep round shell with a ragged rim opens to the front, and inside stand three figures: a person in a shawl on the left, a hooded figure on the right and the baby between them.

It is 4.4 cm high, 4.1 cm wide and 3.8 cm deep and weighs 9 g. That is small enough for a desk, a bedside table or the gap between two books.

Window and wall: the cutout panel

The cutout panel is a different idea: an openwork rectangular frame, 20 × 15.4 cm, with the scene cut out along the bottom edge, a gabled roof on posts, two palm trees at the sides and two figures by the manger.

It is only 0.1 cm thick and weighs 10 g. Lean it against the window pane and the silhouettes show against the daylight; lean it against the wall above a sideboard and it frames whatever stands below. It has no holes and no stand, and no tape comes with it, so you choose how to fix it. Our honest note: this is the most delicate piece of the five, so do not press or bend it.

On the tree: hoop ornament and flat baubles

The nativity ornament is a round openwork hoop, 9.8 × 8 cm and 0.3 cm thick, with the manger in the middle, two bowed figures at the sides and a large multi-pointed star on top of the hoop. Two small loops on the upper edge take a string, thread or ribbon, and it hangs from one loop or from both. At 7 g it barely loads a branch.

The flat nativity bauble comes as a pair: two identical discs, 10 × 12.5 cm each and 0.2 cm thick, 20 g together, with the Bethlehem scene in the middle. They store flat in a box with the other baubles and do not shatter like glass. Beyond the tree they hang in a window, on an advent wreath or as an extra on a present. Thread and hooks are not included with either piece. More ideas for the tree itself: Christmas tree decorating ideas, natural and Scandinavian.

One colour, no painting: 10 or 12 shades

Every piece is printed whole in a single colour, with nothing painted on. The shell, the panel and the hoop ornament come in 12 colours: beige, white, black, oak, chocolate, grey, olive, silk silver, silk gold, pink, cherry red and green. The globe and the flat baubles come in 10, without olive and pink.

Our tip: pick one colour for the whole group. White or beige keeps a Scandinavian room calm, silk gold catches the tree lights, black reads as a silhouette against a bright window. Fine layer lines are visible on all of them; that is the 3D print, not a flaw. A matching tree trio and angel are in our windowsill and sideboard decor ideas, ready-made combinations in Sets and the rest in Home decor.

Indoor use only. PLA softens when heated, so keep every nativity away from radiators, fireplaces and real candles; on the table, use LED tealights. The thin panel and the flat baubles dislike pressure and bending.
