Advent calendar fillers for adults are harder to find than toys for kids: grown-ups already own most things that fit in a small box. Whether you are putting together an advent calendar for men, for your girlfriend or for a best friend, nobody remembers 24 separate presents. They remember the mix: something for the hands, something to eat, and a few notes that are only about the two of you.

How to split 24 windows for a grown-up

About 8 things to keep: a small desk or pocket piece (ours are below), warm socks, a pocket notebook, a good pen, a hand cream, a bookmark.
About 8 things to eat or drink: a sample of good coffee or tea, a bar of dark chocolate, a small jar of spice mix or chilli sauce, a sachet of hot chocolate, a miniature of their favourite drink if they drink.
About 8 notes: "breakfast in bed on Sunday", "I do the dishes tonight", a film night of their choice, a photo from last December, a walk to the Christmas market, a playlist you made.

Save the bigger windows for days that count anyway: the weekends, 6 December if St Nicholas is part of your year, and the 24th.

For the desk: fidgets that stay quiet

The infinity cube is about 8 cm long and 4 cm wide and folds on and on in one hand, without loud clicking. The dragon egg fidget, 7 cm and about 89 g, unwinds into a spiral and twists back into an egg. Both suit someone who spends the day on video calls. Sets that fill a week

The impossible cones come as three shapes, a pyramid, a twisted pyramid and a cone, each about 7 cm tall. For the keys: two keychains, two windows

The karambit keychain is 6.5 × 3.4 cm and about 11 g, with a steel ball bearing in the finger ring: finger in, a short flick, and it spins. It only has the silhouette of a karambit, with no blade, no edge and no point. The flexi shark keychain is 12 cm long and under a centimetre thick, and every vertebra moves. The keychain set has both in the same colour, so it covers two windows: the shark early in December, the karambit on a weekend.

Mini trophies: an award for the day

The gold mini trophy comes as ten 3.5 cm cups or five 5 cm ones. Pair each with a note: "best parallel parking of the week", "survived the Monday meeting", "made the best coffee in the house".

One bigger window: a small vase

For someone who cares more about a tidy shelf than a busy desk, the Japandi vase is 9.6 cm tall and 6.4 cm across, ribbed, in ten colours from beige to silk gold. We would not split this by gender, but by where the person spends the day.

How big should the boxes be?

Most of our small pieces are 7 to 8 cm, so boxes of about 9 cm inside take nearly all of them. The 12 cm shark keychain and the 9.6 cm vase need a bigger box or a bag.

Is the karambit keychain a knife?

No. It is a spinner on a steel ball bearing with only the shape of a karambit: no blade, no edge, no point. If the keys go somewhere with strict rules on what you carry, check those rules first.
