A role-playing game table with a parchment map, dice, a white 3D printed ruined gothic archway, five small articulated mini dragons and a black-green skeleton dragon posed as the boss

DnD Accessories: Terrain, Mini Dragons and a Boss Dragon

5 min read Updated By Kahaus · printed in Poland

In short

  • Three jobs on the table: scenery (a ruined portal), a swarm (mini dragons) and a boss (a large poseable dragon).
  • None of this is official merchandise of any game. These are our own 3D prints from PLA, and they work with any fantasy system.
  • The mini dragon sets of 16 and 8 are marked 14+. We give sizes in centimetres, not in a miniature scale, so measure against your own figures.

Most lists of DnD accessories are dice, trays and battle maps, which we do not make. What we print are the pieces that sit on the map and make the players lean in: a ruined gateway, a pile of small dragons and one big dragon nobody wants to fight. If you searched for Dungeons and Dragons accessories, one honest note first: nothing here is licensed merchandise of any game or publisher. It is our own work, printed in Poland, and it fits any fantasy table.

Below we sort them by the job they do in a session.

Tabletop terrain: a ruined portal that is also a phone stand

The Magic Gateway is a crumbling gothic archway: cracked columns, weathered stone blocks and rubble on a stepped base. It stands 19 cm high, is 15.5 cm long and weighs about 0.5 kg. On a map with one-inch squares, the base covers roughly six squares.

The trick is the phone slot. Slide in a phone showing a matching wallpaper or video and the arch turns into a glowing gate. The party reaches the ruins, the game master starts the video, and the portal opens. The slot takes phones from 12 × 6 cm up to 16.5 × 8 cm and 1.28 cm thick. Between sessions it is a phone holder, listed in Desk Gadgets.

Mini dragons: a swarm the party has to deal with

One dragon is a boss fight; sixteen small ones are a different problem. The mini dragon set of 16 gives you exactly that: articulated dragons of about 7–8 cm each, printed in one piece with the joints built in, so the body and tail bend and coil. No assembly, no batteries. The whole set weighs about 96 g and fits in one hand.

At the table they work as a nest of hatchlings, a flight of small drakes or markers for summoned creatures. The listing gives no miniature scale, so check them against your own figures first. At 7–8 cm from nose to tail, one dragon lies across about three squares of a one-inch grid.

For a smaller, uniform group there is the 8-pack: the same size per dragon, all eight alike in shape. Both sets are marked 14+ because of the small linked segments.

The boss: a dragon that towers over the map

Our pick for the boss is the skeleton dragon: 33 cm long with the neck extended and a 26 cm wingspan. Body, tail and wings are articulated along the whole length, so you can crouch it over the ruins, rear it up or spread the wings for the final round. The bony, ghostly look suits an undead dragon or the guardian of a tomb. It comes in five colourways, including white.

For a smaller boss or a young dragon, look at the winged dragon, 20 cm, with a poseable body and wings in four colour blends, or the dragon figure in 22 or 30 cm. Both are listed for ages 3 and up, so they also work at a family table.

The 50 cm XL winged dragon is a different story. It is a decorative collectible marked 14+, with no play function, so we would put it on the shelf behind the game master rather than on the map. All our dragon sizes side by side are in the dragon gift guide, and more figures are in Dragons.

Between turns: something quiet for the hands

Long sessions include a lot of waiting for your turn. The Dragon Egg Fidget is 7 cm tall: pull the top and the scaled shell unwinds into a spiral, turn it back and it closes again. No clicks and no springs, so it does not compete with the game master's voice. More in Fidget Toys.

A gift for an RPG player or game master

Buying for someone who plays? Ask whether they run the game or play in it. A game master gets the most out of the portal and the boss, because they build the scenes; a player is usually happier with the mini dragons or the fidget egg. For a wider list with puzzles and desk pieces, see our nerd gifts.

What we would not give: dice, battle maps or dice towers, because we do not make them, and the mini dragon sets to anyone under 14.

Safety: our dragons have small moving parts and thin segments and are not suitable for children under 3. The mini dragon sets of 16 and 8 and the 50 cm XL dragon are marked 14+.

Questions about DnD accessories

Is this official Dungeons and Dragons merchandise?

No. These are our own 3D prints without a licence from any game or publisher.

Do the mini dragons match a standard miniature scale?

The listing does not state one, and we will not guess. Each dragon is about 7–8 cm long, so measure against your own figures and map grid.

Does the Magic Gateway stand firmly with a phone in it?

It has a stepped base and weighs about 0.5 kg. The slot takes phones up to 16.5 × 8 cm and 1.28 cm thick.
