Realistic Snake Toy: Rubber or Articulated 3D-Printed?

5 min read Updated By Kahaus · printed in Poland

In short

  • A rubber snake is soft, stretchy and cheap, and it can go in the bath or the paddling pool.
  • Our articulated snake is 3D printed from PLA as a chain of hard segments, so it sways and curls section by section, much more like a real snake. It is a figure for the table and the shelf, not for water.
  • Sizes: 21 cm, 27 cm, a 27 cm snake in a 10 cm egg and an 80 cm XL. We describe all of them as figures and decoration for teens and adults; the XL is marked 14+.

Looking for a realistic snake toy? The first decision is not the colour or the length, it is the material: a soft rubber snake, or an articulated one printed in hard segments. Both look convincing lying still on the floor. The difference shows the moment you pick them up.

We print articulated snakes ourselves in Poland, from PLA, so we are not neutral. That is exactly why we will also tell you when a rubber snake is the better buy. Below: the comparison, our sizes and the fake snake prank.

Rubber snake vs 3D-printed snake at a glance

Rubber snake Articulated 3D-printed snake
Feel Soft, squishy, stretchy Hard segments joined by joints
Movement Bends like a rope, both ends droop Sways and curls segment by segment
Water Fine for the bath, the pool, the garden Not a water toy: for dry play and display
Look Pattern painted on a smooth body Printed scales, silk colour blends that shift in zones
Best for Toddlers, bath time, a quick joke Teens and adults: desks, shelves, reptile fans, collectors
Budget Usually the cheapest option More than a basic rubber snake

What a rubber snake does well

A rubber snake is simple, and that is its strength. It is one soft piece that survives being stretched, thrown, sat on and dropped in water, and it rinses clean in seconds.

It is also cheap enough to buy a few and shrug when one disappears under the sofa. For a toddler who mostly squeezes, stretches and throws toys, a rubber snake is the honest choice.

Where it falls short is realism in motion. Lift a rubber snake by the middle and both ends hang down like a strip of liquorice. Real on the floor, fake in your hand.

What an articulated 3D-printed snake does well

Our snakes are printed from PLA as a chain of rigid segments linked by joints along the whole body. Hold it by the head and the body sways; pull it across the table and it slithers, curving joint by joint. A rubber snake imitates the look of a snake. An articulated one also imitates the movement.

The scales are printed, not painted, so they have relief you can feel. We print in silk colour blends that shift in zones along the body, so no two come out exactly alike. The black and black-green versions look the most natural; gold and blue-green-violet are more of a showpiece.

The trade-offs are just as clear. The segments are hard, not squishy, so this is not a snake for squeezing or throwing, and it is not a bath or pool toy. Treat it as a figure for dry play, the desk and the shelf.

We describe all our snakes as figures and decoration for teenagers and adults, not as toys for young children. The 80 cm XL is a decorative collectible with no play function, marked 14+. It also sits in our XL decor collection, and the egg version has its own page under Snakes in an Egg.

Our snake figures have small moving parts. We sell them as figures and decoration for teens and adults, not as toys for children; the 80 cm XL is marked 14+.

The fake snake prank: keep it kind

Search for a realistic snake toy and you will soon find fake snake prank videos. Among friends who laugh easily, a snake on the doormat can be funny. For someone with a real fear of snakes it is not a joke: the fright is genuine and can last long after the laugh.

  • Only surprise people you know well and who you know are not afraid of snakes.
  • Never where a fright could make someone trip or drop something: on stairs, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in a car.
  • Keep it away from pets. A dog or a cat may take it for a real animal, and that is no fun for them.
  • Reveal the snake straight away and laugh together.

Our articulated snakes shine at a different moment: when someone picks one up and it curls round their hand. That surprise ends with "where did you get it", not a scream.

Our honest verdict

Choose a rubber snake for a small child, for the bath, the sandpit or a pool party, or when you need several cheap ones. Choose an articulated snake for someone who wants to hold it, move it and look at it: a teenager, a reptile fan, a collector, anyone with a shelf that needs a snake.

Questions about snake toys

Can the 3D-printed snake go in the bath or the pool?

No. We make it as a figure for dry play, the desk and the shelf. For water, choose a rubber snake.

Is an articulated snake a toy for young children?

No. We describe our snakes as figures and decoration for teenagers and adults, and the 80 cm XL is marked 14+. For a young child, a rubber snake is the simpler choice.

Does it really look like a snake?

In motion, very much so: the body curls joint by joint and the scales have relief. Up close you can tell it is a print, and most colour blends are brighter than a real snake.
